Tub Shower Combo Ideas

Tub shower combos are great for those who like to indulge in the occasional bubble bath, or for those with a smaller bathroom. Recently, many homeowners have been foregoing the bathtub and have been replacing it with a walk in shower instead. This is a great option for those who don't use their bathtub. However, having at least one bathtub in the home is better for resale.

There are a couple of different tub shower combo options available. The most well known option is the prefabricated fiberglass tub shower combo.

Prefabricated models are available in a variety of designs - from basic models, to high-end looks, to completely custom designs. They can also be customized with extra features such as shelves and grab bars. A great way to make a prefab bathtub appear more sleek is by installing a glass shower door. A glass shower door will help to make the bathroom look larger and brighter. While one piece kits are the most waterproof, they are very bulky and often cannot fit between doors. One piece tub shower combos are most popular for new homes and additions since the kit can be set in place before the walls.

While prefab models are the most common, another way to include a tub shower combo is by adding shower fixtures with a freestanding tub. The freestanding tub you choose for a tub shower combo is up to your personal preferences. You can choose anything from a farmhouse style clawfoot tub - to a sleek and modern soaking tub. One major thing to keep in mind when choosing a freestanding tub is the width and height of the tub. Make sure that the bathtub is comfortable to step in and out of and stand in.

If you decide to go with the freestanding tub turned tub shower combo route, you will have to consider your shower curtain option to prevent water from going everywhere. Many homeowners with this type of tub shower combo install a ceiling mounted shower rail with a custom shower curtain to keep the shower water from running all over the bathroom and causing possible moisture damage.

A tub shower combo is a great option for many homeowners because of its versatility. They can be installed as prefabricated units, or they can be incorporated through a free standing tub and shower component. A tub shower combo can work with an endless array of design styles and is perfect for those with a smaller bathroom, or for those with younger children.

Kitchen Design Trend: Blue Cabinets

Blue cabinets have been making a scene in kitchen designs recently. If you love the look of painted cabinets, it might be time to give blue a try.

For many years white kitchen (and bathroom) cabinets has taken center stage in design trends. They are well known for their clean and classic appeal. White cabinets can help to brighten any space and can even help to make a kitchen look larger. Not only can they make a space appear larger, white is a great cabinet color option since it is so versatile. White cabinetry can complement several design styles seamlessly since it is a neutral color.

For many years, white cabinets dominated the scene. That was until a few years ago when gray became the new "it" color. Gray cabinets, like white cabinets, are neutral and can work well with many designs. Gray especially works for cabinet colors since wood cabinets are an otherwise "warm" material. The color also saw a huge jump in popularity since it works with almost any color scheme. However, if gray is not incorporated correctly it come across as "sterile" and "lifeless."

Fortunately, there is a new cabinet color trend in the design world: blue. Blue is a breath of fresh air compared to the neutral whites and grays. Blue cabinets can go well with practically any design style-from traditional, to farmhouse, to modern. They also add a sense of calm to any space. We predict that part of the reason why blue cabinets are increasing in popularity is because blue is an extremely versatile color. Blue hues range from navy, periwinkle, turquoise, sky blue, robin's egg, and blue-gray.

To avoid overloading your kitchen with too much color, you can always include the hue in designated areas. For example, you can include a bright blue cabinet for the kitchen island and choose a traditional color for the wall cabinets. A more modern option would be to include the blue color for the lower cabinets and include open shelves in place of the upper cabinets. This helps to lighten up any space and keeps any space from being too overwhelmed by a particular color.

Even though blue cabinets are a relatively new design trend, we hope that they stick around for a while. What do you think about the new color trend?

Bathroom Tile Trends for 2017

We all know that remodeling your bathroom is a great investment for your home. While bathroom renovations may be pricey, you can see a huge pay off and added value to your home if done correctly. Creating an aesthetically pleasing bathroom is all about choosing a working layout, selecting quality materials and appliances, and combining interesting textures, colors, and shapes throughout the room. A great way to incorporate fun shapes and colors are through your tile selection. While subway tiles are a classic, there are many other options available that will be sure to make a statement in any room. Here are some of the top bathroom tile trends for 2017:

Fish Scale Tiles

Fish scale tile is definitely causing a scene in the design world. The ocean-inspired tiles can add a calming element to any bathroom. While we may attribute fish scales with cool greens and blues, fish scale tiles are available in endless colors and sizes. If you want to shy away from too much color, fish scale tiles can be paired easily with more traditional and simple designs by choosing neutral tile and grout colors.

Wood-Look Tiles

While wood look tile may not be a "new" trend, we believe that it is a trend that will continue to climb in popularity in 2017 and beyond. This flooring option is not only popular in bathrooms, it is also becoming more common in kitchens, living areas, bedrooms, and more. They are the perfect option for those who love the look of hardwood floors, but hate the upkeep. We recommend installing wood-look tiles in interesting patterns, such as herringbone or chevron, to create interest.

Geometric Tiles

Geometric tiles can range from angular patterns with sharp lines, to more curved and floral-like patterns. When paired with simple and classic tiles, graphic tiles add a level of excitement to any space. The variety of shapes, colors, and patterns makes this trend suitable for any design style. One of the biggest trends in geometric design right now are hexagonal tiles; however, other shapes such as triangles, stars, and circles are also chic tile choices. They are a bold choice, yet can be incorporated beautifully in small spurts to avoid overwhelming the space.

Penny Tiles

Penny tile has been on the rise (again) in recent years. They originally debuted in the early 1900's due to its durability and ease to clean. Penny tiles are typically offered in small circles, also called penny rounds, as well as square and hex shapes. Since they are small, penny tiles can help to make a small bathroom appear larger. As a bonus, penny tiles are a great bathroom tile option since they are relatively easy to install. While they are typically installed in black and white patterns, brighter colors are becoming more popular.

Love to Entertain? Consider the Microwave Combo Wall Oven

When considering a kitchen remodel, one of the most important components to consider are the appliances. Appliances range drastically in price and features. Additionally, the location of your appliances is a huge indicator of your overall cooking experience. Two appliances worth noting are the microwave and the oven.

Love to entertain? Two words: Double. Ovens.
Double ovens are great appliances for the big family that enjoys entertaining together, or even the aspiring chef. A double oven is perfect for preparing a full course meal without having to re-heat side dishes or having to spend all day cooking.
While double ovens may be a huge time saver for some; for most families, a double oven will not get used quite as often. Many homeowners with a double oven often find out that the double oven is only used during holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, where there is more cooking to be done. Otherwise, one oven will typically do the trick.

Introducing the Microwave
The microwave was introduced to the market in the 1970's and created a way for people to cook food in less time. They were originally designed to be placed on the countertop. As years went on, many homeowners were hoping to free up counter space and place the microwave elsewhere.

The Microwave Gets a New Home
Some homeowners started installing microwaves over the cook top. Over the range microwaves are great since they help to centralize some of the cooking process. However, professional ranges require a stronger ventilator. According to Yale Appliance, "The average hood is 24" in depth whereas the OTR is only 16". That could be a venting issue on a more powerful range." Thus, the over the range microwave might not be adequate enough for some more powerful cook tops.

Microwave Combo Wall Oven: Combining the Microwave with the Double Oven
A great alternative to an over the range microwave would be to combine the microwave and the oven. It is perfect for those who love to entertain since the cook top, oven, and microwave can be put to use at the same time. Additionally, microwave combo wall ovens typically have the ability to cook as a microwave, convection oven, or both. As a bonus: Since the microwave is now moved from above the cook top, this allows for homeowners to pick out a more eye-catching range hood to accentuate the kitchen's design style!

As you can see, the identity microwave has drastically changed over the years in our kitchens. It has gone from a staple of the counter top appliances, to a built-in add on of the oven. If you have any questions about microwave combo wall ovens, or just kitchen remodels in general, feel free to contact us or give us a call.

Exposed Beams -- Trend or Timeless?

Exposed ceiling beams are a an interesting architectural feature that add a unique flair to any space. Have you been thinking of incorporating beams into your home decor, but you aren't sure if they will complement your design style?

Ceiling beams are a popular home decor element in many homes today. They largely stem from rustic designs; however, they can be incorporated with many design styles. Wooden beams can be added to contrast with a cold, clean look, or it can accentuate an already warm design style. A good rule of thumb is to include exposed beams with styles that typically incorporate natural finishes. This can include rustic, farmhouse, Scandinavian, and traditional. Our advice is to avoid pairing rustic wooden beams with an overly modern design. The texture of the wood can be an eyesore in an otherwise sleek design. For more modern homes, we recommend metal beams instead.

Exposed beams can be incorporated in place of a load-bearing wall, or simply for decorative reasons. We have recently completed two kitchen remodels that included exposed ceiling beams. One remodel incorporated exposed beams because of the removal of a load-bearing wall, while the other included beams to accentuate the design style. The added beams in each home give off a completely different mood; however, they each aesthetically accentuate the room.

Whether they are used for structural reasons, or for design flair, there is no doubt that exposed beams add visual interest to homeowners and guests alike. It is important to take the room size an ceiling height when considering an exposed beam. Since exposed beams are meant to accentuate a space, it is important to not pick beams that feel to heavy. This can make a space feel claustrophobic. Instead, choose beams that are relatively the same proportion to your decor.

Exposed beams are a great visual element for any space. They can work seamlessly with with many design styles and give your home that extra "flair." Even though they have become very popular over the last few years, we believe that exposed beams are here to stay in the design world.  Thinking about incorporating exposed beams in your home? It is best to consult a home improvement expert since installing exposed beams can be tricky. 4 Major Components of a Kitchen Remodel

Have you been dreaming of remodeling your kitchen? Whether it be to create more space, update the look, or increase your home value, kitchen remodels are a great investment for your home. Here are 4 major components of a kitchen remodel:

1. Layout
The layout of your kitchen is one of the most, if not the most, important components of your kitchen remodel. Since kitchens often undergo so much usage, it is important that the work flow is efficient and works for your needs. Some experts say that a no-fail solution to efficient kitchens is the "work triangle." The work triangle was developed in the 1940's to examine the efficiency between the three major kitchen appliances: the refrigerator, sink, and stove. The "work triangle" is a great tool to use when planning your kitchen layout.

2. Materials and Finishes
The materials and finishes you choose will largely depend on your budget and personal preferences. Some major decisions that need to be made for a kitchen remodel include: countertop material, cabinetry, and flooring. Material options can dramatically range in prices, so it is important to do your research on each option. Some popular countertop materials include granite, quartz, laminate, concrete, and marble. Flooring options range from ceramic tile, hardwood, linoleum, vinyl, among many others. Cabinets are also available in a wide range of materials including: solid wood, plywood panel, aluminum, wood veneer, and polyethylene.

3. Lighting
Kitchens require lots of light for safety when cooking. Along with adding safety to your kitchen, lights can set the tone of the whole space. Like cabinets, flooring, and countertops, there are many lighting options for your kitchen. A good option for kitchens are several can lights, pendant lights over a bar/breakfast bar area, and under-cabinet lighting. Lighting is also a good way to make some energy-efficient choices through choosing LED or fluorescent bulbs.

4. Finishing Touches
Finishing touches can make or break a space. Some finishing touches to keep in mind are: paint color, seating options, backsplash, as well as other decorative items. A good rule of thumb is to contrast your cabinet color with your paint color to add some dimension to your space. For example, a dark paint color paired with dark cabinetry could leave the room feeling too dark. Create the illusion of more light by choosing a lighter color. The same concept applies to your backsplash. Your backsplash should contrast with your cabinet and countertop, as well as add visual interest to the space. Don't be afraid to steer from subway tiles and choose a more decorative option. The finishing touches of the space are a great way to let your personality shine through.

Kitchen Renovation: Granite or Quartz?

Kitchens are the heart of the home, it is where you prepare your meals and where family comes to gather together. A kitchen remodel is a large investment; however, it can also have the most bang for your buck. Thus, kitchen remodels are becoming increasingly popular. According to Home Advisor, your kitchen remodeling budget will be broken down by:
  • Design fees: 4%
  • Installation: 17%
  • Appliances and ventilation: 14%
  • Cabinetry and hardware: 29%
  • Countertops: 10%
  • Lighting: 5%
  • Flooring: 7%
  • Doors and windows: 4%
  • Walls and ceilings: 5%
  • Faucets and plumbing: 4%
  • Other: 1%

Even though countertops only account for an average of 10% of your budget, choosing the right countertops can either make or break your kitchen remodel. The top two countertop materials on the market right now are granite and quartz. However, what are the pros and cons of each of these options?

Appearance
Granite offers a natural stone aesthetic with many variations in the colors and markings. Some may prefer to have a natural look to their countertops, while others are turned off by the variations.
Quartz offers a more consistent look and comes in a variety of colors from neutrals to striking colors of blues, greens, oranges, and so on.

Cost
In real estate, granite is often seen as a luxury item. It typically costs around $50-$100 per square foot. However, top-of-the-line granite can cost as much as $225 per square foot.
Surprisingly, quartz is often the more costly choice for countertops. This option can cost as much as $100-$185 per square foot.

Maintenance
One of the biggest advantages of granite is its incredible heat resistance; however, it also comes with a major drawback. Granite is naturally porous, which makes is prone to stains and scratches. Depending on the type of granite and how often it is used; granite may be needed to be sealed every 1-3 years. The typical cost to have it sealed can range from $0.68 to $1.49 per square foot. Over time, this expense can add up.
On the other hand, quartz is non-porous and doesn’t require annual sealing like granite. Quartz is hygienic and is durable against scratches and stains. However, it is important to note that quartz may be burned easily from hot pots and develop chips in the material. To repair chipping, a professional service is required.

Return on Investment
Given the recent scare of radon in granite, some homeowners may be weary of moving into a home with granite countertops. However, Forbes.com says, “granites contain parts per billion of radium…it is determined that there is a minimal and acceptable amount of radon in average granite building materials.” Considering the radiation we experience from day-to-day life, including flying and walking around the city; the radium levels in granite should not be of very high concern. Fortunately, many of those in the market for a new home see granite as a bonus and can add as much as 75% return on investment.
Quartz comes in a close second to granite, as far as kitchen countertops go, with an average of 60% return on investment. This could be because of their lack of natural looking pigments and colors. Although quartz can come in almost any color, a neutral colored countertop would yield a much higher return than a brightly colored countertop.

Why You Should Decorate with Taupe

The 2017 Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year, Poised Taupe, is available in SW 6039. Photo: Sherwin-Williams
Sherwin-Williams recently announced its Color of the Year for 2017: Poised Taupe. Susan Wadden, top color picker, describes this color as, “what happens when cool gray gets together with brown and has a baby.”
What exactly is taupe? Taupe can be defined as “a moderate to dark brownish gray, sometimes slightly tinged with purple, yellow, or green.” The word taupe, meaning mole, originated in France in the early 1900’s.
How do they choose the color of the year? In an article from Custom Home, Kayla Devon notes:
“At Sherwin Williams, six team members substantiates their color picks from a concentrated industry and presents a color story to all other team members expressing what the story says about cultural sentiment. From there, four final color stories are determined, which Jordan says is significant because there are different tastes and different things happening simultaneously. When it comes to choosing the color of the year, Jordan takes over, searching for the story with the strongest message and the color that communicates the larger picture.”
After choosing the Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year for 2016, Alabaster, Jackie Jordan stepped down; which gave room to Sue Wadden to enter the role as top color picker. Although we cannot be sure that the the current top color picker for Sherwin Williams, Jackie Jordan,  uses this process as well; there is no argument that choosing the Color of the Year doesn’t happen by accident.
Poised Taupe is a dynamic color that accents well with neutrals and vibrant colors. Photo: HomeDit
Why is this color applicable now? After years of seeing gray dominate the home design scene, it is about time that a warmer color would come into play. The gray-brown color adds a level of sophistication and warmth to any home and can be seen in many home decor companies.
Poised Taupe proves to be a dynamic, yet muted color. It has more personality than a typical beige or gray; yet it can coexist with neutrals and vibrant colors alike. We believe that this is the perfect color for those wanting to add some warmth to the overwhelming amount of gray that appeared in home design this year. According to the Huffington Post, Poised Taupe is “not hot or cold, gray or brown, dark or light, taupe exists somewhere in the lukewarm middle zone.”
prevsherwinwillcolors
Sherwin Williams colors of the year from 2012-2017
There are a variety of hues from the Color of the Year picks from 2012-2017. From 2012-2014, cool colors dominated the scene. Then in 2015, Sherwin-Williams picked the vibrant pink-orange color: Coral Reef. Coral Reef was chosen for 2015 because it was, “perfectly suited to celebrate a mid-decade year that’s poised for revitalization.” This can be seen as the turning point for Sherwin-Williams Colors of the Year to follow.
The next year, the paint company chose Alabaster for the 2016 color. Alabaster represents the “less is more” mentality-perhaps stemming from the rise in minimalism. From there, another neutral color was picked: Poised Taupe. With Alabaster in 2016 and Poised Taupe in 2017, we can only guess what is on the rise for 2018. Do you think that neutral colors or here to stay, or will we go back to vibrant colors such as Argyle and Coral Reef? Who knows, maybe the bright and vibrant colors of the past will come full circle.
